Today I made my first call with the Beta of Skype for S60, and I was a bit curious how it would work. And it worked excellent, I made a call to friends that are in Kenya (to their mobile) and the sound was as if I was calling them on my landlinephone and this was over a 3G connection. I couldn't get it to work with my wireless broadband for some reason, I will look into this problem later. It was almost a fifth of the cost with my landline, so it's for sure a cheaper solution to use.
I have used both Fring and Truphone to make call from my phone/internet and they have worked so-so but I'm a little impressed that Skype Mobile worked this good. I will certainly use it when I make calls to my international contacts.
You can download Skype Beta from http://skype.com/m on your mobile!
I'm sure that all the other Nokia bloggers will give you a more in-depth review so I'm only giving you my simple point as an User this time!
As a VERY frequent user of my N95 I find myself in need of uploading my photos and videos to different online services, and even if I favour Share on OVI, there are other places where I need photos. And the most elegant and impressive way to do that is to use ShoZu. I use ShoZu primarily to upload to Facebook, my Swedish blog and to email stuff to friends.
The thing I really like with ShoZu is that it streamline itself with your camera and as soon as you take photo it asks you if you want to upload it to your preferred place. I use my Swedish blog as default so I will always have the latest photos there. I have even used ShoZu to Blog on my Swedish Blog at times, its easy to use it and when you open an photo in ShoZu you can add Description and Tags. I Use the description to write my notes in the blogs when I do it like this and it works very good.
I suggest you head over to the ShoZu Blog and make their a friend of yours, and of course set up an account with ShoZu and get organized!
A good thing with your Nokki5 (and for that matter a lot of the smartphones out there) is that they can't get boring regarding how they look....on the screen that is! There's a massive amount of themes out there I sometimes find myself getting a bit lost by all the different, beautiful and sometimes a bit strange themes out there.
I have, as well as others, my favourite creators and I would like to share those with you. The first one I discovered was
Jaspp over at Symbian Blog! The blog is in Italian but it's possible to read his articles if you use the translation function up at right to translate the site into English or German. Back now to his Themes before I get lost in all the other good things to find over there. Every Sunday he posts some new themes so that's the day to go over if not right now. His postings are great and I always get there to find something new. Right now my favourite is "Everything Dark"
Next place up was Mobile9, but this wasn't new to me as a used it before my N95 days. Over there you can find a massive amount of themes, applications, videos, backgrounds, screensavers. And if you sign up for it, you can get around the 15 downloads a day limit. Enough said about Mobile9 now.
Next up is Lillium also an Italian blog but this one is all about Symbian Themes and this themes they're real art I tell you. This guy know what he's doing and he has got my total admiration. I love them to bits really and his themes are the one I use most frequently.
The one I have been using most is PinkTribal seen here:
And if you want to try you luck yourself you can get Carbide.ui S60 Theme Edition 3.X (you can download it from http://www.forum.nokia.com/ just search it in there, it’s free). And to make your own art I suggest using Paintshop pro or if you have Photoshop it's even better.
Today I want to tip you about a really good software for your N95 (Probably it works on all S60 phones), and that is
Nimbuzz. I have tried it out for about two weeks now and it works excellent on both my phone and also on my computer. The main thing a like about Nimbuzz is the fact that you can use it for: MSN, Yahoo, Googletalk, AIM, Hyvees and Jabber. I'm familiar with MSN, Yahoo, and Googletalk, Hyves and Jabber I haven't been using before but now I have an Hyves account at least but nobody to chat with there....yet....
Anyway back to my review of Nimbuzz now, I was disappointed when I had used MSN on my phone for 30 days and they told me I had to pay to use it for another 30 days. So I started to search for a replacement and first I strated to use Fring, but get fed up with that they didn't sort you contacts so after that I searched more and after a while I read about Nimbuzz in an discussion group (can't remember where, sorry guys!) and decided to give it a shot. And I was really delighted to find that Nimbuzz sorts your contacts AND doesn't import you other contacts to mess it up even more.
So what is my conclusion now then? Well, I use Nimbuzz and it has never failed me so I can only say one thing:
Yesterday I attended Dustin Home electronics fair at Anexxet, The Globe area in Stockholm. They had an extensive display of all different electronics for the home. And obviously I was most interested in the mobile scene!
This time I mostly checked out Nokias competion to see what they have to offer and even if one can get impressed by for instance Samsungs latest developments and fro all means also LG mobile phones., I still come back to Nokia S60 series. I find Nokia S60 series to be so user friendly and have more stable impression. I tried out the N82 and made some hands on feels at N95 8GB which I haven't tried IRL.
The other things I looked at was Laptops, I'm starting to feel tired of being looked to one place at home with my staion PC. Since I got my N95 I've started to be more and more into the possibilities to be mobile with my everyday computing. And one thing is for sure, My N95 gives me a rather good mobility, but for some things it would be more easy to use and laptop. One Laptop I really like was an Lenovo one, it was compact, stylish and looked like the one I have been thinking about. Well, time has to show if and when I will get one.
I'm leaving you with some photos from the fair now.
I have now browsed around to see what kind of accessories I would like to have to my N95-1. And there's a lot of them around but what to get?
Well obviously it depends on what your needs are and what you would like to spend on it. I'm very interested to see what I would need to use just my N95 and don't use any computer. And also what to have if one goes hiking and want to Blog when your out and about. So this is what I would get:
- A protective case to keep your N95 dry!
- A case to protect it from being scratched
- Equipment to charge the battery
- Tripod/Gorilla Pod
- Telescopic Lens
- Keyboard
Regardless if your plans not include being out in rain and moist, it's not possible to avoid. So the first thing to get is a waterproof case and there's a lot of them in the market so I will not make any suggestions other than be sure that the one you buy has got double seals.
Another thing to secure is of course that protect your equipment from getting scratched, and the solution for that is to get a crystal case (better make that 2, they're not expensive!) So here's a link to where to get one.
There's not a lot of possibilities to charge the battery when you're out and about. So I would have at least one emergency battery loader, and one that's not expensive is the Energizer and works very good. The downside of that type is of course you might need to bring extra batteries with you (= extra weight), so another solution is and solar powered one. There's a couple of them to, so it's up to you what brand/price you'd like to spend. I found one that seems to be a good one and that's Proporta's Solar charger.
Tripods is good when you're photographing, and I suggest you go read this excellent article to get your bearings straight in this matter, you get some tip about HDR photo at the same time!
Telescopic Lens, well It's not the best solution but there's no other so here's a link where to get one.
A keyboard will make it easier for you to write email, write for your blog and whatever you need to do that needs input. Of course the first one to get is the Nokia SU-8W, as it has got the shortcuts for your S60 equipment. But there are other ones like the Freedom Universal Bluetooth Keyboard and the new Logitech Dinovo Mini. But I think I would go for the Nokia one even if it's not that stylish, but who needs that when your out and about?
Well so there you have some of my thoughts about what's needed, If you have other suggestions please give me your comments!
Since I got my N95-1 31 October I have been a keen surfer to find just the right software, services and accessories to my mobile. And to find the right service for syncing/backup hasn't been easy. First I was extremely happy to find zyb by Zyb Technologies, Denmark. And to set that service up was an easy task so I was happy about it. Then I discovered mobical, by Tactel, a Swedish company. And they had an even better service than zyb. So then I started to use both of them side by side. But after about two moths I discovered Bloove and their service have become my main service for Sync/backup today. I think that bloove's interface is the best and simplest to use, and it's so easy to edit, plus that they a socialnetworking possibility that's also excellent. There's only one thing I miss with them and that is a backup of the calendar!
Today I also found an article about syncing on http://darlamack.blogs.com/ I and I agree to the most of it, BUT if Bloove had also sync of calendar it would be perfect.
The codes aren't published officially
by Nokia, anywhere I've seen or read, and yet they have been covered by
many sites and still frequently asked for by users everywhere. A new
year seemed like a good time to review these useful codes. Use these codes at your own risk. Thanks to DarlaMack at http://darlamack.blogs.com
